alb5135869 Artist: Claude Gillot, French, 16731722, Study for Festival of the God Pan (La Fete du Dieu Pan), Red chalk with graphite underdrawing on tan laid paper, cut into three pieces and mounted on wove paper, with outlining in dark brown ink, overall (irreg.): 16.5 × 36.5 cm (6 1/2 × 14 3/8 in.), Claude Gillot, most famous as the teacher of Jean-Antoine Watteau, made drawings on antique themes and from contemporary Italian comedy, in large part preparatory for the more than five hundred prints produced following his designs, by himself or others, over his lifetime. This is the final drawing for the print exhibited alongside, one of a series of four etchings published about 1708, representing bacchanals, celebrations of the pagan gods Pan, Diana, Bacchus, and Faunus. The great nineteenth-century critic Edmond de Goncourt described Gillot as a draftsman with an elegant and intricate line, although Goncourt also lamented that Gillot was never able to rid himself of the dry manner of the printmaker. Goncourt went on to say that the drawings look like counterproofs of delicate prints executed in red ink, certainly an apt description of this work., French, 18th century, Works on Paper - Drawings and Watercolors.
